Reprint of the 1931 edition. Oversized Octavo. Durham, N.C.: Seeman Press, 1931. 222 p. The purpose of this work was to show the lives of the American people during this early period, as revealed in their sports and recreation. An attempt is made to trace the originsof the American Sports, to discuss the principal ones pursued, and, finally, to show the reaction of the people. The author maintains that the American people played long before the organization of sports in America, and were not on the whole insistent about recreations.

Sports were more something hoped for, something far in the future, rather than an actuality. The chapters cover Hunting, shooting practices, wild fowl shooting, the ring hunt, fox hunting, deer hunting, game laws, fishing, ball playing, quoits, nine pins, skittles and bowls, dollor pitching, long bullets, archery, swimming, skating, sleighing, horse racing, cockfighting, animal baiting, gander pulling, gouging and boxing, wrestling, walking, foot racing, boat racing as well as womens and childrens sports.

Also included a bibliography.
